Welcome to Belgrade! Whether you’re here for a weekend escape or starting a longer Balkan adventure, Serbia’s capital has a lot to offer — rich history, vibrant nightlife, warm hospitality, and a seriously underrated food scene (but we’ll let our restaurant guide handle that part).
If it’s your first time in Belgrade, here’s a handpicked list of 10 things you shouldn’t miss. We’ve mixed the must-sees with some lesser-known gems, so you can get a real feel of the city.
1. Stroll Through Kalemegdan Fortress and Park
This is the starting point. Kalemegdan is where the Danube and Sava rivers meet, and where Belgrade’s story begins. Walk along the ancient stone walls, watch street performers, and take in one of the best sunset views in the city. It’s a great intro to Belgrade’s layers of history — Roman, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslav.

Tip: Go early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and fewer crowds.
2. Walk Down Knez Mihailova Street
This pedestrian street connects Kalemegdan to Republic Square and is perfect for people-watching, shopping, or grabbing a coffee in one of the many sidewalk cafes. You’ll pass beautiful 19th-century architecture and plenty of opportunities to grab souvenirs.

3. Visit the Church of Saint Sava
One of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, this white-stone giant is impossible to miss. Its interiors are still being decorated, but the crypt downstairs is stunning and open to visitors. The surrounding area is peaceful and ideal for a midday break.

4. Explore the Bohemian Quarter – Skadarlija
Think cobblestone streets, old-school taverns (kafanas), live traditional music, and a lot of rakija. Skadarlija is where artists, poets, and dreamers used to hang out — and still do. It’s touristy but still full of charm.
Pro tip: Make a reservation at one of the traditional restaurants in the evening for the full experience.
5. Take a Cruise or a Walk Along the Rivers
Belgrade is one of the rare cities with two major rivers — and locals love using them. You can take a boat cruise, rent a kayak, or just walk or bike along the riverbanks. The area around Beton Hala has great restaurants and bars with river views.
6. Museum of Yugoslavia and Tito’s Mausoleum
Even if you’re not into politics or history, this place is fascinating. Learn more about the Yugoslav era and see where Tito, the former leader, is buried. The museum has a slightly retro feel — and that’s part of the charm.
It’s a short ride from the city center — take a taxi or bus #40/41.
7. Go Out in Savamala or Cetinjska
Belgrade’s nightlife is legendary, and it’s not all about loud clubs. Savamala (by the river) is a cool mix of industrial and artsy bars, while Cetinjska is a cluster of hip, alternative spots tucked behind an old brewery.

8. Relax at Ada Ciganlija (“Belgrade Sea”)
In the summer, Ada is the place locals go to swim, sunbathe, bike, eat, or even bungee jump. It’s a man-made lake just 15 minutes from the city center, and it feels like a mini vacation inside the city.
Not just for summer — great for peaceful walks year-round.
9. Discover Zemun – A Different Side of Belgrade
Zemun used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it still feels like a small Central European town. Climb Gardoš Tower for panoramic views, walk the Danube promenade, and enjoy some fresh river fish.

Best reached by taxi or public bus. It’s a slower pace and totally worth the detour.
10. Soak Up the Local Vibe at a Kafana or Street Market
Belgrade isn’t just about sights — it’s about atmosphere. Head to a local kafana (traditional tavern) for grilled meats and live folk music, or stroll through Zeleni Venac or Bajloni markets to see what locals are buying, cooking, and chatting about.
